It’s critical to be sensitive to clients’ identities, backgrounds, experiences, values, and beliefs, use respectful and appropriate language, and adhere to the ICF’s Code of Ethics and Core Values. Coaches should keep client information confidential according to stakeholder agreements and relevant laws and refer clients to other help professionals if necessary.
Embodying a Coaching Mindset: This involves developing and maintaining an open, curious, flexible, and client-oriented mindset. It also means acknowledging that clients control their decisions, engaging in continuous learning and development, and having an ongoing reflection practice to improve coaching. Coaches should remain aware and open to how context and culture affect themselves and others. Recognizing the power of intuition and self-awareness to help clients, maintaining the capacity to regulate emotions, mentally and emotionally preparing for sessions, and seeking help from external sources when needed are also important.
Establishing and Maintaining Agreements: To foster a successful coaching relationship, it is essential to establish and maintain clear agreements between the client and the relevant stakeholders. These agreements should include an explanation of the coaching process, an understanding of the guidelines and parameters of the relationship, and agreement on the overall coaching plan and goals. Additionally, it is necessary to determine the client’s compatibility with the coach, identify and reconfirm the client’s goals for the session, and collaborate with clients to define or confirm success criteria for their goals in their coaching engagement or one-on-one coaching sessions. Coaches should also manage session time and focus and continue coaching toward the client’s desired outcome unless the client indicates otherwise. Coaches should also end the relationship in a manner that honors the client’s experience.
Cultivating Trust and Safety: Coaches must collaborate with clients to create a safe and secure space to express themselves freely. They should strive to understand the client’s identity, environment, values, and beliefs and adapt their coaching to their needs. Coaches should also recognize and value the client’s unique talents and insights and work in the coaching process, show support, empathy, and care for the client, and support their feelings, perceptions, concerns, beliefs, and suggestions by using openness and transparency to show vulnerability and build trust.
Maintaining Presence: Maintaining presence is essential for successful coaching and can be achieved by focusing on the client, being observant and empathetic, and responding to their needs. Coaches should exhibit curiosity and manage their emotions to stay in the present and create a space of silence, pause, or reflection to allow for thought and consideration.
Active Listening: Listening actively involves considering the client’s background, identity, surroundings, experiences, and beliefs and then reflecting or summarizing what they’re saying to ensure it’s clear and understood. Coaches should also look for patterns in the client’s behavior and emotions over time to identify themes and designs.
Evoking Awareness: This technique facilitates client insight and learning through tools and techniques such as powerful questioning, silence, metaphor, or analogy. Coaches should consider the client’s experience when deciding what may be most beneficial, challenge the client to elicit awareness or insight, inquire about the client’s way of thinking and values, needs, wants, and beliefs, and ask questions beyond current thinking. Additionally, coaches should encourage the client to share their experience in the present moment, note what is working to improve the client’s progress, adjust the coaching approach according to the client’s needs, help the client to identify factors that influence their present and future patterns of behavior, thinking or emotion, encourage the client to come up with ideas about how to move forward, support reframing perspectives, and share observations, insights, feelings, and feelings without attachment that have the potential to generate new learning.

The Path to Becoming an Accredited ICF ACC ASSociate certified Coach
The Path to Becoming an Accredited ICF ACC Associate Certified Coach The journey to becoming an ICF ACC Associate Certified Coach involves several steps:
- Finish Coach Training: To qualify for ICF ACC Associate Certified Coach , coaches must complete at least 60 hours of ICF Coaches-specific Training. Coaches must complete training in an ICF-accredited or ICF-approved training program Level 1.
- Acquire Coaching Experience: Coaches must have completed a minimum of 100 hours of professional coaching experience, including a minimum of 75 hours of professional paid coaching, following the completion of a coach training program and within the preceding 18 months.
- Submit an Application: Once the necessary training and experience have been obtained, coaches may apply for ICF (ACC) Associate Certified Coach . This certification process involves submitting evidence of training and experience and completing a coach knowledge assessment.
- Complete the Coach Knowledge Assessment: The coach knowledge assessment (CKA) is a multi-choice test that assesses a coach’s knowledge of ICF Core competencies and the ICF Code of Ethics. Coaches must complete the CKA to earn ICF ACC
- Certification Renewal Every 3 Years: The ICF ACC Certificate is valid for three years. Coaches must complete 10 hours of Mentorina and 40 hours of Coach Continuing Education every three years and follow the ICF Code of Ethics.
